If the results of research are to contribute to achieving sustainable development, someone - a company, a public agency, legislators, international negotiators or anon-governmental organization - must be prepared to use those results in their operations or activities. The prospects of this happening are improved if re-searchers and intended users begin to collaborate while a research programme is still at the planning stage. This is what is meant by building bridges between research and practice.
