Scope
Regulations and policies strongly influence the possibilities for microorganisms to be used in various beneficial environmental and biotechnological applications. The regulatory conditions differ markedly depending on the type of organism, intended application and country of use.

This event provides an excellent opportunity to find out about the most recent developments in legislation and policy-making on the use of beneficial microorganisms. You will meet representatives of the research community, industry as well regulatory bodies. It will be a forum for the stimulating and productive exchange of ideas and expertise among the many disciplines that are relevant for regulation of the use of microorganisms.

The course
The course component of Microbes and the Law (October 5-8) is aimed at PhD students (mid to final stage) and early-career researchers, as well as stakeholders from industry or regulatory authorities. Experienced experts will present insightful analyses of the regulatory conditions for use of microbes in diverse areas, from agriculture and environment, to food, biotechnology and probiotics. Discussions can continue in an informal setting at a “divertissement” with microbiological connections.

The symposium
The course is followed by a symposium (October 8-9). Contributions are sought from researchers, as well as practitioners from industry and regulatory bodies. We particularly welcome new information on safety assessments of microorganisms and their potential implications for legislation and policy-making. A poster session will complement oral presentations during the symposium. All delegates are warmly invited to the symposium dinner.
