Mistra the first investor in a new ethical fund for emerging markets

Mistra, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, has added a new asset manager to its team: the Danish company BankInvest, which in April is setting up a new ethical global emerging markets fund, ‘BI Global Emerging Markets Equities SRI´. Companies will be selected for inclusion in the fund on the basis of positive criteria, combined with traditional negative screening.

‘Mistra is the first investor in this fund. At present, there are very few products, if any, with a sustainability profile in the area of global emerging markets. In many developing countries, consideration for the environment is inadequate and legislation weak or poorly enforced. Corporate governance is therefore a particularly important criterion in an SRI fund for emerging markets. BankInvest´s initiative is to be welcomed. I hope that many others will follow both BankInvest´s and Mistra´s example. Ethical issues need to carry greater weight in emerging markets. The goal is a better world,´ says Mistra´s Managing Director, Måns Lönnroth.

‘Ethical investment is no here-today, gone-tomorrow phenomenon. High standards of ethics are an additional indicator of a well-managed business, and the ethical dimension has given us yet another tool in our bottom-up analysis of companies,´ says Søren Bertelsen, Head of Emerging Markets at BankInvest. ‘We´re delighted to be launching “BI Global Emerging Markets Equities SRI", and look forward to a good, long-term partnership with Mistra.´

The management mandate entrusted to BankInvest is entirely in line with Mistra´s investment policy, which is that the Foundation´s assets are to be managed in a way that promotes a better environment and a sustainable society, within a framework of limited risk. Mistra´s decision is yet another step towards its goal of reviewing its entire portfolio by 2007, in terms of its ethical and environmental profile. At present, some 80% of Mistra´s capital of SEK 3.6 billion is invested on the basis of ethical and environmental criteria.

Mistra has recently launched a major research initiative on the significance of the capital market for sustainable development. Researchers will be studying what players on the financial markets can do to promote sustainable development and to encourage companies to do the same.
