THE PROBLEM
Microorganisms can reduce environmental problems in crop production by replacing chemical pesticides in biocontrol or reducing nutrient leakage in plant growth promotion. Moreover, microorganisms can replace fossil fuels in biofuel production and, in bioprophylaxis, prevent toxic compounds from contaminating the environment. Many of these applications require large-scale fermentor production of the microorganisms, followed by formulation steps to ensure long term stability and ease of application. Safe use of microorganisms further requires a careful consequence analysis, which for some applications is followed by a registration procedure. The use of microorganisms for novel, non-conventional applications thus requires new knowledge within formulation and fermentation techniques, as well as analyses and assessment of possible environmental and human health consequences. Lack of knowledge within these fields seriously hampers the development of microbial solutions to environmental problems, and restricts the growth of new biotechnology industries based on these applications.HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM?
The research programme forms a "DOM Center of excellence" for research and development of fermentation/formulation techniques and safety assessment systems for novel domesticated microorganisms to be used in environmental and biotech applications. Through communication with regulatory authorities at early stages of development, the registration process will be facilitated, allowing more rapid market introduction. Since process and product safety are assessed at an early stage, potential risks for humans and the environment can be minimised. In order to influence long-term policy changes DOM also communicates with the political system and NGO:s. Programme activities have a solid base of fundamental research on microbial formulation and safety issues. Product- and partner projects focus on different environmental applications involving use of both bacteria and fungi. The fermentation and formulation procedures strongly influence the microorganisms´ viability and metabolic activity after prolonged storage. Safety assessments are part of all research projects. The DOM business manager develops industrial contacts and manages contracts negotiations through the product?development project cycle and exit-phase.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?
The users of programme results and achievements are the biotechnology industries and regulatory authorities, as well as the research community. However, the main beneficiaries will be our environment, and society as a whole. In addition, those directly working with the practical application of microbial inoculants will also benefit; e.g. farmers and garden workers who will have access to safe microbial products and thereby be less exposed to chemical pesticides.
