THE PROBLEMThe combustion of fossil fuels and household waste as well as bio-fuels causes emissions of hazardous substances, especially nitrogen oxides, dioxins, sulphur dioxide and volatile hydrocarbons. There is a great need for more effective measures to control exhaust emissions from different types of stationary plants and vehicles. The optimum scenario is for methods to be developed that take care of several pollutants at the same time in an efficient and sustainable manner and without any new hazardous substances being formed in the process.HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM?The aim of the programme is to develop plasma technology for cost-effective exhaust emission control. The programme is primarily focused on the treatment of nitrogen oxides and volatile hydrocarbons and the aim is for the technology to be used to reduce several pollutants at the same time. Using a hollow cathode with a special geometry and low energy consumption, extremely rapid reactions may be achieved.
