THE PROBLEM
Attaining sustainable transportation has proven to be one of the most difficult societal goals to achieve. There is however no lack of suggestions for policies, instruments and measures that can improve the situation. The problem is that few of the good intended solutions are put into practice.

HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM?
TransportMistra´s main ambition is to develop strategies, models and tools for making the transport sector head towards sustainability. TransportMistra´s research involves various disciplines needed for such a hard task.

TransportMistra consists of three sub programs: IMPACT, INFORM and INCLUDE.

IMPACT´s main ambition is to develop models and tools for the support of sustainability oriented decision-making and implementation in the transport sector through the use of a selection of common focal points (CFP). The CFPs will be analyzed through a set of research themes, thereby letting IMPACT draw conclusions about how strategies can be improved to better correspond with intentions of sustainable mobility.

The overall goal of INFORM is to develop strategies which address how current stakeholder discourses on sustainable transport can be realigned to more efficiently promote sustainable transportation solutions. To analyze how consensus can be attained, the focus of the research programme INFORM is on stakeholders´ definitions and applications of sustainable transportation, and the resultant associated goals and practices that such use permits.

INCLUDE contributes to the development and implementation of strategies, methods and tools for achieving an environmentally sustainable transport system that is well integrated with the natural and cultural properties in the environment and allows creating new landscape values that harmonize with national and international environmental quality objectives.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?
The stakeholder groups include organized and institutional actors in the sector as well as individual transport users. We have identified, and will work with, three types of user communities: policymaking, implementation practice and the international scientific community.
