Scope of the Symposium
Industrial biotechnology is foreseen to provide environment-friendly alternative means for production of energy, chemicals and materials. The possibility to engineer metabolic pathways in microorganisms for production of desired chemicals, and to access and design biocatalysts with desired specificity, catalytic efficiency and stability from the natural biodiversity, and further evolution in laboratory has made biotechnology a very powerful tool for chemical production. So far, developments in the area have been limited to high value products. To make the technology generally applicable and competitive, some issues related to biocatalyst development, cofactor-dependent processes, and process engineering need to be solved.Europe is a world leader in enzymes production and has a strong tradition in enzyme technology for synthesis of high-value chemicals. A number of centers of excellence related to industrial biotechnology at different European universities have been established and also some industries have taken a lead in commercialising products based on biotech routes.
The aim of this symposium is to obtain a view of the current status of the developments at some of these leading organisations in Europe concerning industrial biotechnology for production of speciality and fine chemicals, the driving force(s) for the chemical industry to adopt biotech based processes, methods for knowledge generation, and the bottlenecks in the large scale implementation of biotechnology in the industry.
