Workshop: Plant Induced Resistance for Pest and Disease Control (PIRAC)

Insects and pathogens cause large damage of crops in agriculture. Treatments with pesticides are the main control measures. However, pesticides are expensive and in many countries not economically feasible. They also cause health hazards and ecological consequences due to the contamination of groundwater. Increasingly restrictive regulations will make the use of these agrochemicals more and more difficult. Urgent attention must therefore be given to researching alternative strategies to combat pathogens and pests. The specter of global warming too, has serious ramifications, as insects such as aphids, may now occupy a wider habitat range than was the case 10 years ago.

Research leading to alternative management is needed to more effectively combat threats to global food sources, including non-regionalized collaboration between scientists interested in this area.  This conference will explore current research, and will hopefully, stimulate meaningful collaboration between partners across continents as we seek to find new environmentally-acceptable strategies to fight pests and diseases.

We have been granted financial support from the International Foundation for Science and the Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, Mistra to organize a workshop in South Africa for scientists interested in the above problems. The aim of the workshop is to strengthen the relationships between Swedish and African scientists in the areas of ecology, entomology, plant physiology and pathology, plant molecular biology and plant breeding for continuing long term collaborations. Another goal is to widen the networks and contacts between scientists in the above fields within Africa and between Sweden and Africa with an emphasis on younger scientists and IFS-grantees.

Program
The workshop will consist of talks and formal discussions and there will be ample time for informal discussions.

The following sessions are planned:

  • Molecular and structural plant responses to pathogen and insect stress
  • Plant breeding for insect resistance
  • Managing pathogen and insect stress through cropping systems and treatments
