Ian Hamilton’s research is part of the Umeå School of Business (USBE) research program which goes under the research umbrella “Sustainable Development: The New Role of Institutional Investors”. The aim of this research group is to study current indications that institutional investors are combining economic, social and environmental considerations into financial decisions.

Ian Hamilton’s research interest is the Swedish state pension funds, each of which has its own interpretation of what it mean to take ethical and environmental considerations in the investment strategy. These six governmental pension funds (AP Funds) are managing future pensions of Swedish citizens and should therefore draw considerable visibility with a desired spill over effect on other institutional investors. The purpose of looking at the pension funds would be to see how each fund interprets the government call from 2001 to take environmental and ethical considerations in investment decisions and actually how they go about doing this. Hopefully the outcome of this study will be a valuable tool for any pension fund incorporating SRI considerations in their investments.
