WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?
Emissions of hazardous substances from vehicles powered by fossil fuels contribute to the substantial, ever-increasing pollution from the transport sector. There is a great need for alternative power sources – such as fuel cells – for vehicles. These new sources must, however, meet sustainability requirements; they must be resource-efficient, recoverable and safe at the same time as being cost-effective and capable of high-performance.
HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION?
Cost-effective polymer fuel cells may be of considerable importance for the design of future energy systems. In the programme, Swedish research, with its strong tradition in electrochemistry, is to be utilised to develop environmentally sound fuel cells for vehicles, portable products and equipment for stationary energy production. The aim is to demonstrate laboratory prototypes of competitive and high-performance fuel cells using recently developed material and material combinations as well as lifecycle analyses. A particular interest is paid to the objective of reducing the dependency on platinum metals and to how fuel cells may be introduced into the society.
